Overview
Following a successful tender, FG Library was appointed by East Riding of Yorkshire Council to deliver the refurbishment of North Bridlington Library. Working in close collaboration with the council, the project developed through a carefully considered design process, with layouts and colour schemes refined to meet the brief. The vision was to create a bright, modern environment that would enhance the user experience while maintaining the character of the existing building. Flexibility and forward-thinking design were central to the scheme, ensuring the space could adapt to the evolving needs of the community.

The Main Library
The main library has been reimagined as a welcoming and intuitive space, designed to support a variety of user needs. Upon entry, visitors are greeted by clearly identifiable staff counter pods and information points, creating an accessible and user-friendly experience. The introduction of mobile shelving alongside bespoke perimeter units provides both flexibility and structure, finished in a clean white palette with subtle timber accents that complement the building’s restored architectural features.
Dedicated IT areas have been integrated with future-proofed power modules, ensuring the space is equipped for modern digital use. A series of comfortable booths offer areas for private study or informal meetings, while more relaxed seating zones encourage reading and social interaction. Larger, adaptable tables allow the space to transition easily to support events and group activities. Living moss wall panels have been incorporated throughout, introducing a natural element that enhances wellbeing while helping to improve air quality.

Children’s Library
Relocated to the rear of the building, the children’s library has been designed as an engaging and imaginative environment that reflects its seaside context. A bespoke boat feature forms the centrepiece of the space, creating a sense of play and discovery for young visitors. This is complemented by a custom Storywall with integrated sensory elements, encouraging interaction and supporting early learning. The overall design fosters creativity and exploration while providing a safe and inviting setting for children and families.

Health Hub
As part of the library’s evolving role within the community, a dedicated Health Hub has been introduced to support wellbeing services. The space has been designed with flexibility in mind, using finned acoustic screens that allow it to be opened up or enclosed depending on use. This ensures privacy for consultations while maintaining a sense of openness when required. Comfortable seating and carefully considered layouts create a calm, supportive environment for informal appointments, health checks, and community wellbeing initiatives.

Makerspace
A key feature of the refurbishment is the creation of a dedicated makerspace, designed to support innovation, creativity, and enterprise. The space has been carefully planned to accommodate a wide range of technical arts and crafts, with a layout that can adapt to different activities and user requirements. Once fully operational, it will house equipment such as 3D printers, embroidery machines, and game design software, providing valuable resources for local entrepreneurs, students, and creators. This addition reflects a broader shift in library design, positioning the space as a hub for skills development and collaboration.

Outcome
The transformation of North Bridlington Library has resulted in a vibrant, multi-functional environment that serves as a true community hub. The refurbishment has maximised the available space, introducing improved lighting, modern finishes, and upgraded furniture to create a light and contemporary feel without losing the building’s original character.
The inclusion of flexible layouts, dedicated study areas, wellbeing facilities, and creative workspaces ensures the library can support a diverse range of uses, from quiet study to community events and business development. The result is a future-ready space that not only enhances the visitor experience but also strengthens the library’s role at the heart of the local community.
