The Brief

The main lecture theatre at the University of Kent had endured heavy use, the décor needed a refresh and the seating was well overdue for replacement. Initially looking at refurbishment the University wanted to the lecture theatre at the heart of the learning space.

The space needed vision of the future with interactive teaching points and a state of the art sound system.

Desks needed to deliver power and usb charging allowing students to keep their electrical devices charged for the duration of the lecture.

The Solution

Audise by Frem Group provided Scholar Lecture Theatre Chair. Desks were fitted with OE Electrics Pixel units to provide power and USB charging. The power source was routed up the end stanchion and joined below thee desk. Creating a neat and safe solution.

The layout was reworked to allow better use of the space, aisles were regulated and set to meet current BS regulations. Different size seat centres were used to create the even aisles and a four colour random layout gave the space a modern and vibrant feel. The upholstery material was upgraded with chairs being covered in Camira Synergy wool bland fabric (95% virgin wool).

To better cater for wheelchair bound patrons the whole of the front row was provided with mobile writing ledges. These can also be used by able bodied students meaning companions and carers can also be accommodated.

As always seems to be the case the works were subject to tight deadlines. Phased deliveries allowed us to best use the minimal amount of storage space on site. Working closely with the Main contractor and the University Estates department we handed over on time.
