Background
Central Bedfordshire Council (CBC) partnered with Stotfold Town Council in January 2020 to explore relocating the existing library into the new Greenacre Centre, specifically the Oak Hall. Originally designed for sports and community events, the Oak Hall had become underused. The Town Council’s vision was to transform it into a vibrant community hub, incorporating a library and café.
Consultation & Planning
CBC worked with a Library Design/FFE specialist to develop a proof-of-concept demonstrating how the library could operate within the Oak Hall. Following positive public consultation, CBC’s Executive Committee approved the relocation in October 2022.
Design Brief
After a competitive tender in August 2024, FG Library were appointed to deliver the FFE stage. Our role focused on:
- Designing for a much larger footprint
- Creating a welcoming Children’s Library and improving acoustics
- Establishing clear zoning: young adult, study, IT, and self-service areas
- Ensuring a smooth customer journey, with a café integrated into the space
Delivery & Installation
FG Library managed both the design and fit-out, bringing the vision to life through carefully planned layouts, bespoke furniture, and a customer-centric flow throughout the library.
Opening Day
The new Stotfold Library officially opened on 11 June 2025. The launch was met with enthusiasm from staff, families, and local residents, who praised the new community-focused design.
Impact & Results
91% increase in footfall in the first two months:
- June/July 2024: 5,548 visitors
- June/July 2025: 10,590 visitors
Improved facilities for all age groups, with particular success in the Children’s Library and sensory spaces.
