Vision
Doncaster Council approached FG Library with the goal of modernising Mexborough Library, creating a calm and welcoming environment that could better serve the local community. The ambition was to bring a fresh, contemporary feel to the main library while ensuring the design complemented the new children’s area, which is being developed separately with a forest theme. A palette of calm green tones was chosen to provide continuity between the spaces and to establish a soothing atmosphere throughout the building.
Key Features
The new library design focuses on combining functionality with comfort and modern aesthetics. Adjustable Mirage shelving has been specified to accommodate a stock of nearly 10,000 books, offering flexibility as the collection evolves. A curved reception desk will be positioned against the brick wall facing the entrance, designed to seat two to three staff comfortably and equipped with integrated storage, a cash till, and a raised counter section.
Technology has also been carefully considered, with a dedicated bring-your-own-laptop zone supported by Evolve tables and Pure IT benching from Imperial. Alongside this, five public computers will be positioned along the window wall and three more within an alcove.
Comfortable seating areas have been introduced to encourage reading, study, and small group discussions. Instead of sofas, the design incorporates Matilda and Bari chairs from Chairplan, arranged around low tables to create relaxed but practical spaces. Display features will include replacements for the existing cubes, which the library team value highly, as well as new pinboards and moveable screens to support community engagement.
The adjoining meeting room has been kept flexible and unfussy, furnished with flip-top tables on castors and stackable chairs for up to 25 people. This approach supports a wide variety of community activities, from craft workshops to elderly friendship groups and fitness classes.
Conclusion
The redesign of Mexborough Library strikes a balance between practicality and modern style, creating spaces for study, technology use and community gathering while maintaining a consistent look with the children’s area. By combining trusted products such as Mirage shelving, Matilda and Bari seating, and Imperial’s Evolve and Pure IT ranges, the project will deliver a library that is robust, flexible and ready for the future. This transformation reflects Doncaster Council’s vision and ensures that Mexborough Library continues to thrive as a welcoming hub for the local community.
