About The Project

Originally built in the 1920s, the Mapplewell and Staincross Village Hall has long been a staple of local history. The building first served as the Towncroft Working Men’s Club, a vibrant community hub set within its own grounds, complete with a bowling green and a football club. Over the decades, it became a focal point for social gatherings, sporting events, and community activities, enriching the lives of generations of local residents.

As part of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council’s ongoing Libraries Refurbishment Programme, the Village Hall has been transformed into a modern and welcoming space for the 21st century. The recently-refurbished library marks the seventh branch in the borough to benefit from this transformative initiative. The expansion and redesign of the facility bring new opportunities for learning, engagement, and relaxation to the heart of the community.

The Design

Key features of the newly-refurbished library include an enhanced children’s area designed to foster creativity, learning, and imagination. This dedicated space for young visitors is part of a broader commitment to creating inclusive environments where all generations can come together. Additionally, new areas have been introduced for work and study, providing flexible spaces for individuals and groups to focus on tasks or collaborate in a quiet, comfortable setting.

Visitors will also enjoy a refreshed interior, including new carpets throughout the building, as well as upgraded, more comfortable seating designed to create a welcoming atmosphere. The improved design ensures that the Village Hall is better equipped to serve the evolving needs of the local community, providing an inviting space for both social interaction and personal development.

Final Word

The refurbishment has been made possible through funding from Barnsley Council’s Principal Towns and Local Centres programme, with an additional £100,000 investment from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. These financial contributions reflect Barnsley’s commitment to revitalizing local infrastructure, promoting community engagement, and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.

The Mapplewell and Staincross Village Hall is now better positioned to serve the diverse needs of the community, bridging the gap between its rich history and the modern demands of today’s users. With its expanded library facilities and renewed focus on inclusivity and learning, the Village Hall remains a vital space for the people of Barnsley to connect, learn, and grow.
