Creating a More Open, Welcoming Community Library
The Brief
Bedale Community Library wanted to transform its existing space into a brighter, more functional environment that better reflected its role as a modern community hub. The library team was keen to maximise the available footprint, improve accessibility and create dedicated zones that would enhance the experience for visitors of all ages.
Working alongside the library team and North Yorkshire Libraries, FG Library was appointed to redesign and reconfigure the space while minimising disruption to library services and the local community.

Our Solution
Through careful space planning and furniture selection, we reimagined the library layout to create a more open and intuitive environment.
A key objective was to improve the flow of the library and remove visual barriers that made the space feel restricted. By reconfiguring furniture layouts and opening up the entrance area, we were able to create clearer sightlines and a much greater sense of space throughout the library.
The project included:
- Complete space reconfiguration
- New library furniture and shelving solutions
- Creation of a dedicated children’s library area
- A new community seating zone
- Improvements to the entrance and welcome area
- Furniture removal and installation coordination
The Transformation of Bedale Community Library
The refurbishment has completely changed how the space feels and functions.
One of the most noticeable changes is the increased sense of openness. By removing bulky furniture and redesigning the layout, the library now feels brighter, larger and more welcoming from the moment visitors walk through the door.
The children’s area was a major focus of the project. Previously compact and overcrowded, the space has been transformed into an engaging junior zone that encourages reading, imagination and discovery, while providing a better experience for both children and families.
At the heart of the library, a new community area provides comfortable seating where visitors can browse books, meet with others or simply spend time enjoying the space. This flexible hub supports the evolving role of libraries as places for connection, learning and wellbeing.

FG Library: Delivering the Project
The success of the refurbishment was made possible through close collaboration between FG Library, the library team, North Yorkshire Libraries and a dedicated network of volunteers.
By working together and carefully managing the programme, the library was able to reopen as quickly as possible, ensuring minimal disruption for visitors while final touches were completed.
The Outcome: Positive Feedback from Bedale Community Library Users
Since reopening, feedback from library users has been overwhelmingly positive. Visitors have commented on the brighter atmosphere, improved layout and significantly enhanced sense of space.
The redesigned children’s area and new community seating zone have been particularly well received, helping to create a library that is both functional and inviting for a wide range of users.
Today, Bedale Community Library is a vibrant, flexible and welcoming destination that will continue to support its community for years to come.
Client Feedback
“Our library has been transformed from a very drab and rundown area into a vibrant, lively and creative space. Visitors are continually amazed by how much more spacious it feels, and the new children’s area and community space have been particularly appreciated.”
