The Library Hub Weybridge formed an important part of Surrey County Council’s Libraries Transformation Programme, with the project focused on extending and refurbishing the existing Library Hub to better serve the needs of its growing community. The aim was to enhance capacity, improve functionality and create a dynamic environment that supports learning, collaboration and community engagement.
Unlike some of the larger transformation projects across the county, The Library Hub Weybridge presented the challenge of delivering significant improvements within a relatively compact footprint. Every square meter needed to work harder, requiring a carefully considered design approach that balanced functionality, accessibility and user experience.
Working alongside Surrey Libraries, we developed a scheme that maximises the available space while creating a bright, welcoming and highly adaptable environment. The design prioritised flexibility, ensuring that visitors could use the library for a wide range of purposes, from study and reading, to community meetings and collaborative working.
The refurbished library now offers enhanced study spaces and reading areas, supported by flexible soft seating positioned to take full advantage of natural light. New meeting facilities providing valuable spaces for local groups and community activities, while private study pods offer quiet environments for focused work, learning and research. A dedicated children’s area was designed to inspire curiosity and exploration, helping to create an engaging experience for younger visitors and their families.
Throughout the project, accessibility remained a key priority. Dementia and Autism-friendly design principles were incorporated to create an inclusive environment that welcomes all users. Carefully selected furniture, intuitive layouts and adaptable spaces ensure the library was responsive to changing community needs for years to come while remaining central to their wellbeing.
The results:
Following the reopening of The Library Hub Weybridge in October 2025, there have been exceptional uptakes in usage and visitors.
- Visitor increased by 143%
- New memberships rose by a staggering 219%
- Book loans increased by 21%
In addition to this, the enhanced study facilities have experienced significantly increased usage, further establishing the library as a valuable learning and community resource.
The Library Hub Weybridge demonstrates how strategic investment and intelligent design can unlock the full potential of an existing community asset. Despite its modest scale, the project has delivered a highly effective, future-ready library that supports the local community like never before not only offering a dynamic educational space but also increasing wellbeing and community connection at the heart of Weybridge.
