The Brief

To provide a modern library design that will feature at the heart of a community. The library environment needs to promote reading for pleasure as well as for more purposive pursuits. The stock should be arranged in an attractive, welcoming way, encouraging and enticing people to explore the library.

The library will support literacy, formal and informal learning and access to personal development resources.

Innovative and exciting design was the key to the success of this project and the library should be inviting, whilst making a strong visual impact that leads the customer from the entrance into the heart of the library.

The Solution

Our design aims were create a welcoming, reader friendly space which sustains and encourages high levels of public library use both now and in the future.

Our intention was to develop a library environment with a strong visual impact that creates a sense of excitement amongst users, promotes books and reading in an innovative way, raising the profile and increasing library use within the community.

The library was laid out in core zones, with well-guided progressive positioning and flow towards the furthest area.

As well as a refreshed selection of books and an expanded study area, the new library boasts a flexible open-plan layout allowing it to be used for large community events, other features include:

As part of the project, we also supplied and fitted new Milliken carpet. The carpet design was sympathetic to the furniture layout and highlight hot spots within the library.
